“Genius is written all over this play and this Oakland Theater Company production.”

The sound

Sound is the third character in Room 306 — beginning in hyperrealistic 1968 Memphis and dissolving into transcendent abstraction, with thunder that carries the subliminal crack of the bullet to come.

The design follows three principles: earn the supernatural (strict diegetic realism until Camae’s angelic reveal), thunder as death (every storm sound carries the subliminal weight of the bullet to come), and silence as presence (strategic absence). The arc runs realism → uncanny → transcendence → silence. Thunder hides a subliminal gunshot transient — a sharp crack buried in low rumble — each instance more gunshot-like, training the audience for April 4th. Rain is the dramatic engine: steady rain (isolation) → thunder (King’s PTSD trigger) → impossible snow at the door (reality breaks) → absolute silence → the storm’s end (transcendence). Camae has two sonic identities: the maid (grounded diegetic — heels on carpet, flask pouring) and the angel (breath motifs, harmonic shimmer). King’s motif: low brass and cello, dignified but weary. 1968 Memphis texture: the sanitation strike’s “I AM A MAN” chant, period radio and TV through the walls, church bells.
